Martin County Star Newsmakers

Spring in Minnesota: Weather, Movies, and Local News

Michael Ennis
Speaker 1:

All right. So here we go, season two, episode number six. I'm Mike Ennis, I'm your host. This is Martin County Stars Newsmakers Podcast and it's spring. Well, I mean, that's what the calendar says. You know it doesn't feel like spring Friday. So Friday it was 84 degrees here, okay, and then Saturday kind of took a dive. Sunday we had snow. Now, we didn't get a lot of snow, but we were in Fairmont and driving home at about what time was it? Right around three o'clock, boy, the wind was blowing like crazy. We left Fairmont. You could barely see the road, but as we got closer to Welcome, it cleared up pretty nicely. By the time we got home there was no more snow, it had stopped and you know this big blizzard that they talked about kind of dissipated. But nevertheless it's spring in Minnesota and a nice picture on the front page of spring in Minnesota with some birds and different things, and it's kind of neat. It's kind of neat.

Speaker 1:

So lots of things going on. First of all, here's one of my favorite things. It's Hamburger Night Wednesday. I love Hamburger Night. Last time candy and I went to hamburger night. We missed the last one, but we went and you play the raffle. You know, you play a dollar and you, you get to pull a tag on. I think we had pork chops is what it was. We won, we never win, we won. I was sitting there going. In fact I said if I don't win I'm not going to buy anymore. And she came by about a half hour later. She goes what's your number? And Candy told her the number. She goes oh my gosh, you guys are the winners. So I'm convinced it really works. So we got some really nice pork chops out of that deal. Those came from Welcome Meats, which we all know is maybe one of the best meat places in the area. But anyway, it was a lot of fun and we had a really good time.

Speaker 1:

If you're listening in India now, you guys know. If you listened to the last podcast, you know that we have a listener now in India and one in the UK. So I don't know if I should say let me think. What did they say? A mate, right, they're probably laughing going holy smokes, this guy thinks he's British. No, I don't. I mean, I'm American, I'm American. So anyway, but we have we're global. That's right, we're global. You know, I still like to know more about that. Hey, you guys out there. Send me a note telling me why you listen. You know how you found us, how you found us. Anyway, also welcome to those of you in Minneapolis, st Paul. We have a lot of folks listening down in Florida, texas, arizona and Illinois. So happy, happy to have you all aboard this week.

Speaker 1:

On the pet page, kangaroo is the good. Is this a good pet? And is it even legal Kangaroo? It's a couple of really good pictures of kangaroos on the page. You might want to check that out, you know. However, they are known for their aggressive behavior, often boxing on the shore of a lake. They have sharp claws in the right front paws and hind feet and their middle claw can cause serious wounds. Okay, I'm out. No kangaroo for me.

Speaker 1:

This week we saluted at the Martin County Star. We saluted Martin County West sports. Winter sports teams Winter sports teams Boys basketball Boys basketball. I know, let me see. I'm trying to think how many of these kids I know. Well, I know one. I know one of them. Any others, I'm looking. I'm scanning it really quick here for you. Nope, I just know Riley. I know Riley. Yeah, that's it. And then girls basketball I don't know any of the girls in girls basketball. No, oh, that guy, that's a guy. Oh, he's probably the coach. Okay, never mind.

Speaker 1:

The girls finished with a 23-7 record. They won the Valley Conference and was second in the Tomahawk Valley Conference. Congratulations, ladies. They did excellent, did excellent. The guys finished. It says girls here, I think they meant guys. They finished with a 10 and 18 record. They won their opening section game but lost in the second round. So, oh, shoot, shoot, shoot. And then gymnastics Boy. Are they ever posing or what? But you know what? That's okay, that's okay. Nice picture of the ladies there. And the gymnastics girls did a good job wrestling. This one kind of makes me giggle a little bit. Uh, they're one of the guys that wearing a fairmont cardinal t-shirt, I guess, maybe, maybe, I don't know, maybe he was confused that day. Anyway, it's the Red Bulls Doesn't have their record. Three of them, though, did advance to regionals, to state Three of our wrestlers. So they did an excellent job. You know a good job. Excuse me, right before we came on I had a little. I was eating a little cracker or something and got kind of clogged in my throat, so sorry about that.

Speaker 1:

The Dinner Theater at the Red Rock. It is next Friday and Saturday, 11th and 12th of April, murder Mystery Dinner Theater at the Red Rock Center. Those are fun. Those are fun, yow, okay, individual tickets are $55. A table of eight is $360. It's dinner and a show. A three-course meal by Gearheart Catering oh, sounds good. Sounds good.

Speaker 1:

We did that in our family one time. We had a murder mystery. My son put it on and let me think, was I the host? I think I was the mediator, or whatever you want to call it the host of it. It was a lot of fun, though they had me do that, because there was no way I'd ever figure out who was the murderer. I'm terrible at those games, just terrible at them. Hey, seniors who are currently members and newly inducted into the Martin County West National Honor Society I was never part of that group. Can you imagine why? Anyway, no, these are great. We love that Six juniors were newly inducted into the Martin County West National Honor Society chapter and that ceremony was held on Friday morning. So congratulations to all of them.

Speaker 1:

A couple of other things here. On the church page a story on here, by the way there's a beautiful picture of a cross. Really, go to page 12. If you got your paper, take a look at that. Unfortunately it's in black and white because it came in in color, but that page is printed black and white, man in color. It is flat and gorgeous. Oh, online it's in color. Go there, take a look at it there, page 12.

Speaker 1:

Anyways, every believer is in full-time ministry. That is true. That is true. If you're a believer, you're in full-time ministry. Your job is to minister, isn't it? Not just the pastors, it's also your job. And then, of course, chuck, he's got a great column. He always has a great column. The Encouragers is called this week and next week's column I just put it in the paper for next week it is called oh boy, it's about Easter Now I can't remember what he called it. Anyway, it's another good one, though. Take a look at that and go there and see what Chuck has to say.

Speaker 1:

Kind of not a lot going on this week. It was kind of quiet. But we do have a really good story for the front page this week about the Minnesota budget that the governor is putting forth and it is trying to cut money from some of our nursing home budgets, and I've got a call in to a nursing home to get their reaction. But so hopefully we'll find out a little bit more about it. Tomorrow We've got a county commission meeting, so that'll be in the paper. On Wednesday Let me see what else. What else? Nothing much, really, I guess. Oh, you know, wait, wait, wait, wait. Candy and I went and saw the movie the Chosen.

Speaker 1:

Now, for some of you who have been following this, this is season five of the Chosen and they are up to. It started out with Palm Sunday and then it progresses through Holy Week. Now yesterday we saw episodes one and two of season five, episodes one and two. This week we'll see episodes I think it's three, four and five if I remember correctly. But anyway, it was a lot of interesting. It wasn't a lot of action, necessarily, like a lot of them are.

Speaker 1:

Jesus wasn't like healing and those type of things. That's over. But what he was doing this week was, at the very end of it, he was cleansing the temple. If you guys know your Bibles, you know what I'm talking about. He fashioned a whip and he drove him out of the temple. But prior to that, dallas, the writer of the Chosen and the founder or the originator of it, he did it, man. He did a good job on telling the story of why this was so important. The money changers and all that, you know, things that we read in the Bible but we sometimes don't fully understand. But he did a really good job of you see it and you go. Oh, now I get it. So if you have an opportunity to check it out, it'll be out on video and on television actually probably in a month or so. But if you want to go and support at the movie theater, it's kind of fun going to the theater and you can. It's playing all over the place. You know, not just here, because a lot of you listeners are not even in the area, you're everywhere. So just go online, look for the Chosen.

Speaker 1:

It's called the Last Supper and this was, let me see, season five, episodes one and two. Next week, starting on Thursday, it'll be like I said a minute ago, it'll be the second group. It'll be episodes three, four and five, I believe, and then the following week will be the third group and it'll be the end of this season leading up to the crucifixion, which I don't really know for sure, but I don't believe it happens this season. I think it happens next season, but I'm not positive of that. It's one of those things when I saw Mel Gibson's the Passion of the Christ, I loved it and hated it. It's just so hard to watch. I mean it's hard to watch, but it was. It was very good, you know. And then I'm sure Dallas is going to be doing an excellent job also, so I'm looking forward to seeing that too.

Speaker 1:

Other than that, you know, spring is here. It's going to get warmer one day, you know we had a taste of it on Friday, like I said and it's going to get warmer. So you know we'll keep on plugging right. Okay, I'll talk to you next time. That does it for us. Thanks for listening. I'll see you guys. Adios.
