Martin County Star Newsmakers
It's cold up here. New Year and time for a great 2025
And here we go. Hey, welcome back. This is the Martin County Star Newsmakers podcast and I am Mike Ennis, I'm your host and, man, it's good to be back with you. It's been, it seems, like it's been forever. You know, I had the boys helping me for a couple of episodes and we kind of took Christmas and New Year's off that way and we kind of pre-recorded those episodes Anyway. So now we're back here. It is pre-recorded, those episodes Anyway. So now we're back here.
Speaker 1:It is First week of January. It's cold, man, it's cold here. If you're listening down in Texas or Florida or someplace else, you don't understand what this cold really is. I think it's like 15 out today. It's going to be minus the next few days, overnight lows. It's just cold. You know, no matter what you do, you walk outside and you're like holy smokes, but you get used to it Anyway. So here we are and this week's show brought to you by us, martin Kennedy Star.
Speaker 1:Hey, we've got a contest going on. If you've seen the Facebook page, or if you got the newspaper, you saw the pictures. Seen the Facebook page, or if you got the newspaper, you saw the pictures Newspaper's in black and white, so it's not quite as impressive as it is. If you see the car wrapped. We got the van wrapped. It's got our MC Star logo all over it, our Aunt Ivy logo, our podcast logo, big star on it. I mean it really looks sharp. They did really a good job, man. I was really impressed and they got it done really fast. Anyway, so it's all done. And so we're having a contest.
Speaker 1:If you see me out and about in the MC Star Mobile I call it the Star Mobile, I don't know. Anyway, in the Star Mobile you can't miss it. If you see me out and about, take a picture. Take a picture and then send it to me, either email mcstarmichael at gmailcom or drop it to my. You can text it to me at 507-848-3261. Send your name, how to get a hold of you, either email or well, I guess I'd have your phone number, but anyway, send that along. And then, where did you see us? Where did you see the star, the star mobile? And what I'm going to do is I'm going to drop this into a bucket. We've got a bucket down here and we're putting them in and then we're going to pull one out on February 1st and that person will get dinner for two at the Sherbourne Legion. It's a steak night, you know, get a couple of steaks Sounds good and for doing nothing but taking a picture, so drop it to us, all right. So keep that in mind. I'll remind you again before we go off today, so in case you didn't have a pen and you weren't ready to write this down, okay. So anyway, we look forward to doing that. We've already gotten a couple in and they were kind of fun to get in and both people I knew they were doing it because they said, oh, I want to take a picture, I want to take a picture. So they ran out and took a picture of me sitting behind the wheel. I think I stuck my tongue out on them or something I can't remember. I want to promote these people.
Speaker 1:This is the 21st Annual Fairmont Trap Gun Show, january 11th and 12th, which is next week for us. If you live here in the area, it's going to be at the Martin County Martin Luther High School. That is sorry, martin Luther High School, that's in Northrop. It's a gun show. I love gun shows. I mean, I love to walk around a gun show and browse and take my time and see what's going on. So anyway, this is January 11th and 12th. Anyway, it also supports their Trap Club and I'm sure they would appreciate it. It costs five bucks to get in, which is nothing. All right, five dollars is all.
Speaker 1:And then this week in the paper we had lots of remembrances. If you've got your newspaper, you know that I love the front page I really do. It's got a lot of pictures of things that went on this past year, some of the highlights and really some nice, nice photos and also some short stories that go along with it. So anyway, it was just a nice paper. And then also in page 10, in memoriam, this is the folks who passed away this past year and we like to pay respects, and several of the names I was just going through it right before we went on and several of the names are people I know and I was looking, going, wow, I remember him, I remember her, and thinking about it for myself, and you know you miss them and you it for myself, and you know you miss them, and you just look and think, oh, here's one, oh, my Matthew Zim Zim Sorry, zim, born 1977. And just a young guy, just a young guy Just passed away this past year. Anyway, we have a lot that's going on. You can take a look at that Also, don't forget, don't forget to go to Martin Co.
Speaker 1:Martin CoStar Co stands for county, okay, but that's our website, martin M-A-R-T-I-N-C-O-S-T-A-R dot com and you can go there and you can take a peek at the online paper. If you are not a subscriber first of all, you can become a subscriber just by following the prompts and stuff, and it's like $38 for a year and you get the whole paper and the whole paper's in color online. Comics are in color, everything's in color online and you can get that. If not, you want the paper. You know the actual newspaper in your hand. A lot of people say that they go no, I don't like online. I want the paper in my hand and I'm like that's cool. You know we still have that, of course, and so you can also sign up there if you so desire, and we would love to have you as a subscriber, would love to have you as a subscriber. We've added a lot of new subscribers in the last couple of months. It's really, really going well and we're looking forward to this year.
Speaker 1:We're trying to reach out, we're trying to branch out and we're trying to look at more things and cover more stories, but I need more help to do that. I need a couple of people. I need a sports reporter to follow the sports for me in Fairmont. If you are so inclined, if you love sports, give me a call 507-764-6681. And give me a call, let's talk. Okay, we'll get you. We'll get you writing stories and taking pictures and maybe even a podcast involved. All right, maybe even a podcast involved, we'd love that. And then also I need somebody to follow some other. I've got pretty much Trimont and Wellcome and Sherbourne covered, but I need Fairmont and Truman news covered and I need somebody out there who loves to write and you can make some money. You know it doesn't pay. You're not going to make a million, but you know you get paid for your time. And if you enjoy going to city council meetings, then you know, or meetings at all and following news, we would love to have you.
Speaker 1:We're starting to branch out and we are adding a lot of subscribers and we need to cover more and more, so we need your help, all right. So also keep that in mind. If you're so inclined, we would love to have it put you on board and give us a hand with this. We also could use a sales person. We need sales help. Like I told you, we're growing and we need some sales help and Candy is our sales manager, but she's inundated, she's overworked, she's busy, busy, busy and she's making ads and selling and we need some help. So if you would once again give us a call 507-764-6681. And talk to Candy and she'll get you set up and she can talk to you and see, you know, maybe this is something that you might want to do. You can make a little bit of money and you can have some fun. We're pretty nice to work for and work with and so we would love to have you on board.
Speaker 1:Oh, coming up this next week, there's lots, boy. You know it's the first of the year and all the city councils are changing. They're adding members and losing members, adding mayors, losing mayors, so it's going to be a whole new game in all the cities. They're going to be adding and, like I said, subtracting, so it's going to be new faces on the city council. So we're looking forward to and school boards for that matter, and we're looking forward to getting to know all those people and you know, see what's going on and so we need help there, but we also need you to be a reader. We need you. And then also, going on in sports, the winter sports are happening right now Wrestling, basketball, hockey, of course, and well, that's one thing, I'm sorry. I love to watch hockey but I don't want to play it. It's too darn cold for me. You know, I'm from the South originally and so it's too darn cold for me, but I don't mind, I'd love to watch somebody else do it. Let me see. And so we're going to have that taking place and we're going to have a lot of things going on there. We're looking forward to this new year, 2025.
Speaker 1:It just seems like yesterday it was 2000, doesn't it? For some of those who are maybe not quite as old as me, but you know, you lived a little while. You remember when 2000 hit and it seemed like the year 2000 has come and gone and now we're at 2025. Kids who were born anytime in the year 2000 are now turning 24 and 25 years old. And this is just. They're not even kids anymore. You know, these are, they're married and they're adults and they have their own children. It just, it just amazes me how time is flying by. I can remember 1999, december 31st. You know and remember all the stuff about Y2K. Oh, my goodness, people were going crazy about that. Oh, the world's going to come to an end. And here we are, 25 years later and nothing came to an end.
Speaker 1:So you know, in the news this past week Jimmy Carter, 39th president, passed away. He was 100. Wow, you know, I remember Jimmy Carter, lousy economy Boy, I'll tell you that right now, but he seemed to be a very nice man. I don't know him, he seemed like he was a pretty nice guy. His wife Rosalyn, she seemed to be pretty nice. Billy, remember his brother, billy Billy Beer, and anyway, that was kind of fun. You know, I actually had a Billy Beer old can. I did. I had the old Billy Beer can. I was a collector, that kind of stuff, and I had one. I forget what's happened to it, doggone it. So anyway, Jimmy Carter passed away.
Speaker 1:Sorry to hear that, but you know, 100 years old, he had a good life. You know, what I admired about him was the way that he was always helping with Habitat for Humanity. After he stepped down from being president or lost the election, whatever it was, he took that up and he was always out there helping people and building the homes. So that was nice. I admire him for that and I'll give him kudos for that. All right, anyway, that's enough of that. Donald Trump he takes office again in just about three weeks and we'll see what happens there. Looking forward to that, hopefully some good things. You know you always hope for the best, right, and we're looking forward to some good things there. So, anyway, that about does it for us this week.
Speaker 1:Folks, there's not a lot going on. It's cold. We've got a great contest. Look for the van, look for the van. Win a free steak. That'd be nice. Take the wife out, you tell her, or take the husband out. Either way, you say look what I did. I took a picture and I got a free steak dinner. So you know, we'll put you in the. Now we're only giving away, you know, one couple. We're not giving away a hundred of them, just two, two steak dinners. I'm not that rich and anyway. So we look forward to, hopefully, you sending your picture in. Tell us where you took it, tell us where we were when you took our picture and who you are, of course, so we know how to get a hold of you. All right, well, we will see you next week. We're looking forward to it already. Until then, this is it. I'm Mike Ennis, I'm your host and this is the Martin County Star Newsmakers Podcast. Do not forget to subscribe. All right bye.
