Speaker 1:

No, that's not.

Speaker 2:

that's late you should have done it right then. All right, here we are, episode number 12, martin County Stars Newsmakers Podcast, and I'm Mike Ennis, I'm your host, and today I got a big surprise. So let me explain what's going on. I was out in the lobby talking to a school teacher from Martin County West. She was a third grade teacher and she brought in some letters to Santa that we're going to put in the paper next week. And then, all of a sudden, I got my little brother on the phone and today's my birthday, so let me explain. And my little brother's on the phone. We're talking and then I hear three people singing happy birthday and I'm trying to figure this out and I look up and there are my three sons Chris is from Delaware, from Houston, and Sean from Wyoming. They came in to surprise me and my wife knew about this and lied to me big time and changed the story.

Speaker 1:

Yes, actually we're not here to surprise you. There's a Minnesota Timberwolves game we're going to go into a little later you just happen to be here so it's just like hey, alright, we're here, it's fun, have a good time.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Don't listen to him. That's Chris. Chris say hi.

Speaker 1:

Hello, how are you? Hey, it is cool to be here because we've heard a lot about Martin County. As a matter of fact, we were driving down here from Minneapolis. We drove through the little sign that says Martin County.

Speaker 3:

And I said hey, this is the home of.

Speaker 1:

Martin County Star Podcast. I'm sure everyone listens. No one heard me say it, but my mother said it was there.

Speaker 2:

It was there. It was going to live there forever. Chris lives in Delaware. He works in radio in Delaware. What else do you want to say before we get going?

Speaker 1:

I also narrate books. If you would like to figure out what books Do, a plug I've narrated three books from Pete $15, by the way for a plug. Is this the ad portion? Today's podcast is brought to you by.

Speaker 2:

Well, Chris, it is.

Speaker 1:

Pete Robertucci has written some post-apocalyptic style books, oh really, and I was the narrator for him. They've done pretty well for his print versions and online versions, so I narrated it and I've done the whole trilogy and so you can find them on anywhere you get books. Audible is kind of the best place and it's Pete Robert Tucci and the books are Three Days to Eden, eden Army, and right now I don't remember the third book's name, but you'll be able to find it.

Speaker 3:

Yeah you'll be able to find it.

Speaker 1:

I'm not paying anything for this plug so?

Speaker 2:

it's good. Okay, this is only an hour show, all right. Oh, calm down, All right. So then we have Ricky, and Ricky has actually listened to the books online.

Speaker 3:

I have. Yeah, I mean hi, I'm Rick, I'm from Houston. Yeah, I mean hi, I'm Rick, I'm from Houston. Yeah, the books online that Chris referred to. They're pretty great. I'm still looking forward to reading the other ones. What?

Speaker 1:

did you pay him to say that $20. $20. And me, I get nothing. No, you get $15.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I get $15. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3:

But no, some of you guys might know my son To Haiti With Love. That's my son, zach.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you can't stop me, you've got to say something, okay. So, zachy, they're still over in Haiti and actually Diane, ricky's wife, is fixing to send the next episode, nice, which will be episode, I think. Is it five, ricky? Yeah, I think it's five. And it's kind of an emotional topic with all of us because it's Christmas time and Zach and Mika just celebrated their second anniversary. They have their first baby, little naya. She's a little dream boat. She's a sweetheart. She is that's sean. Say sean, say hi, he's from wyoming, hi, sean. Now, sean, they know you here, also from wyoming. They know you also they do.

Speaker 4:

I am am the guy who writes random movie reviews for anything that pops into my crazy brain.

Speaker 2:

He's the I love movie guy and Sean is here and, yep, Sean writes all the movie reviews. Sean went to school in Wyoming in a film.

Speaker 4:

Film. Yeah, that's correct. We have one school. Everyone else is getting a plug, so I figured I would get one too $15. Well, no, chris is going to cover that, oh yeah okay, yeah, so now I'm down 10 and and I'll chat gpt my review for you for your book, so it's going to be great.

Speaker 4:

You know 150 words of chat, gpt gloriousness we'll go with that word. That's a a word. No, I studied film in Central Wyoming College in Riverton, wyoming, and they scooped me up after I got done. I guess they saw I was good or they pitied me.

Speaker 2:

Either way, I get a paycheck. Well, I know that I put a disclaimer on there. I call you Shawn Michael. In your reviews and I always say that he's a media expert. I use the term loosely, but in our family he's as close to an expert as we get. So anyway, I brought him in today because today's podcast day. I brought him in and I'm gonna have him work with the podcast, uh, with me. So here we are looking through our, our paper. Everybody's got a paper and we're looking through it. Number one is here's a big story for us guys. Big story for us is might fall on the floor but, is the pending.

Speaker 2:

Is there a doctor in the house? We have a doctor who just bought that building. It's an old clinic here in town and he's going to move into the clinic and Dr Bockenberg some of you guys know who he is. And Dr Bachenberg Some of you guys know who he is. And Dr Bachenberg, he takes care of patients out at Chimprin's Ridge and also now he'll be in town three days a week Monday, tuesday, wednesday mornings and then he's going to hire either a nurse, practitioner or a PA to work all week. So we're kind of excited about that.

Speaker 2:

It gives us, you know, if folks, in the middle of winter especially, they don't have to go to Fairmont or Jackson or into St James to see a doctor.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I would also add that your weather is crazy. We got in, it was minus 5. And to your point, though, how cool is it to be able to have a doctor, have a place for folks to be able to go, especially in a small town, especially in a small town? And yeah, wintertime is going to be. It's rough. You guys can bear it, you can make it. We're wimps because we're from out of town. Except for Sean in Wyoming, it was minus degrees there as well.

Speaker 4:

But to be able to have a doctor to come. It was a Tuesday.

Speaker 2:

For me it was a Tuesday, yeah, he's in his shorts here and it was 55, I think in houston it was 40 for me, so it was like summertime for you guys and uh, you know it's like, you know it's funny, it's sunday, it was 55 here, seriously, yeah, last sunday yeah, yeah, that's crazy just four days ago.

Speaker 1:

Well, so I heard on the radio sorry and squirrel, um, but I heard on the radio that, um, last year this time, yeah, it was 55 degrees like this day.

Speaker 2:

last year was the best winter ever, best winter ever last year.

Speaker 1:

Well, anyway, cool that a new doctor's coming in and a PA and someplace you'll be able to trust. Take your loved ones even during the wintertime.

Speaker 2:

Right, right. And so what were you going to say, sean? You had something.

Speaker 4:

Oh, I can't remember anymore.

Speaker 2:

I've got a brain like Dory and so, anyway, we're just going to kind of go through the paper. You've got to remember Ricky's from Houston, texas Excuse me, sorry, chris is how big is your town, chris, that you live in?

Speaker 1:

Well, where I live is probably 6,000 people.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay, so when?

Speaker 1:

you know the area I live on. It's called Delmarva, it's Delaware, a little bit of Maryland and Virginia, like where they all Island and connect. That's probably three 400,000.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so, okay. So Martin County has got about 20,000 people total. Okay, so you guys get an idea. Sean, he lives in Wyoming and Riverton's, I don't know what 15, 20,000, 10,000.

Speaker 4:

Oh, it's like Fairmont, yeah, yeah, basically.

Speaker 2:

Okay, it's like.

Speaker 4:

Fairmont yeah, 10,000 people coming and going.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, now Ricky, there's 10,000 on his block, just about. I mean you guys. If you've never been to Houston, I see no reason to go now. You know you live this long without it, you're fine. 7.2 million people.

Speaker 3:

Good Nice In the metro area, in the metro area, yeah, so yeah.

Speaker 2:

Well, you know, we used to live there way back. I forget what year it was the 80s, I think it was Something like that and they used to call North Houston. Canada was called North Houston, mexico was called South Houston. I don't know what he's doing. He's getting a paper. Oh okay, you never can tell with my sons what is happening. Anyway, we're going to go through it. Page two this is the opinion page. Hey, by the way, I like the just really quick Dad.

Speaker 1:

I love the clips from the past.

Speaker 4:

You like, that Isn't that cool I was reading through that.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, go ahead the very first one in 1900, a New England supper and Christmas sale will be held at the room lately occupied by the Holter Harness Shop. I don't know what any of that means, other than it just seems cool to have kind of like a little blast from the past.

Speaker 2:

I actually enjoy reading those. That's really cool. I have sat in the reading, I call it the reading room. I've sat in the reading, I call it the reading room. Yeah, you know, I've sat in there with a book open and just I can spend hours going through them. That's great. I find them incredible. Look at this 1922. A spelling contest will be held in school before the basketball game. It was estimated shortly after dinner that the wind released a velocity of 55 miles per hour, which ripped through a few auto-tops.

Speaker 4:

I guess they had beans for dinner. Dude Is this me. That's just you. That's part of the spelling bee I forgot.

Speaker 2:

This week we changed things up a little bit. We have outstanding in your field and that's on the back four pages. If you get a chance, you guys grab your buzzers. Everybody's got to get a buzzer. That way I can go ahead and do this. I'm going to give them a quiz and at home you guys can play along. Hold on, I'm going to turn my page. This is the one we can't look at.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you can't look at it because you would have the answers. I know I'm making a lot of noise and I'm sorry folks. I've got to get my page turned. Okay, so wait, where's Chris's?

Speaker 3:

Right, oh, okay, chris make your buzzer sound.

Speaker 2:

Okay, that's Chris, ricky or Sean. Okay, ricky. Okay, all right, so that's our buzzer. These are farming fun. Facts, okay, okay. Facts, okay, okay. There is a reward and a prize, so do we buzz in before the prize? Yeah, yeah, yeah, buzz in before you answer, okay.

Speaker 1:

And then I'll call. I don't know yet. I don't know yet. We'll figure it out later the dinner that Chris will make.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, the dinner that, chris is going to make.

Speaker 1:

Okay, here we go.

Speaker 2:

First question is does China own land in America? I think, chris, you had it first yes, they do Bonus points. How much land Sean no bonus?

Speaker 1:

points are to me Him first he doesn't know.

Speaker 2:

Ricky 20%, sean, 40%, 30%.

Speaker 1:

I was going to say 30%.

Speaker 2:

They own 384,000 acres, which is a 30% increase over 2019. It's the closest. It's not going over, so I went. Well, I don't know, because 30% of the land 300 acres 384,000.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that's nowhere near. That's like I don't know how big it is, but it's not that big. It's like Martin County.

Speaker 2:

Okay, they own land, though, near the airport's base in North Dakota. Is that a good idea? Absolutely no, it's not Well wait, Sean's a veteran and he used to guard missile silos. So, Sean, tell us about it.

Speaker 4:

No, no, no, Absolutely not. That's a terrible idea, terrible, as Charles Markle would say terrible, just knucklehead terrible.

Speaker 2:

Did you know who is the largest American citizen, landowner Chris Warren Buffett. Warren Buffett, he said no, I say oh.

Speaker 3:

Ricky, I don't remember who it is exactly, but they're in Texas.

Speaker 1:

No, elon Musk.

Speaker 3:

No, no Sean.

Speaker 4:

Kevin Costner in Yellowstone. Bill Gates, I was close, that's pretty much Kevin Costner. Sean Kevin Costner in Yellowstone, bill Gates, I was close. That's pretty much Kevin.

Speaker 2:

Costner yeah, that's it yeah okay, let me see Pretty much. Um. Okay, how long do cows live before they're slaughtered? Chris?

Speaker 1:

Until I'm hungry.

Speaker 2:

Okay, Sean.

Speaker 4:

That was my answer.

Speaker 2:

That was your answer.

Speaker 3:

I'd say four years.

Speaker 2:

Four years, ricky, you're closest because these two had no real answer. One and a half to two years. One and a half to two years yeah, that's what it says. Wow, you know, that's why we're here for you.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I know, oh, here's a good one we're going to eat him?

Speaker 2:

Which animal makes the most money on a farm to raise it? Which animal they don't have like jobs? Oh, he's a paper boy. Who has it? A horse, a horse, no, horse, no, I'm going to say a chicken. You didn't buzz in you did absolutely.

Speaker 4:

I did Sorry. I did first, sean. I was giving my older brother love. I see Chicken, chickens.

Speaker 2:

Chickens. That's the first correct answer we've had today.

Speaker 1:

We're smart, do chickens fly.

Speaker 2:

Raising chickens is a great way to start any small farm or homestead. What's number two? Goats? Yes, yeah. Did you?

Speaker 1:

see it. No, my wife is a home. We're basically becoming homesteaders.

Speaker 2:

Oh.

Speaker 1:

So she's getting chickens and goats. We just bought land in Delaware, so yeah, that's the whole thing.

Speaker 2:

Well then, you need to add also to your list bees and rabbits. They're there. They're number three and four, not rabbits.

Speaker 1:

Bees. Are there Be Bees, Okay number three.

Speaker 3:

We do a bee garden. Outdoor kitchens would be good too.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, yes.

Speaker 4:

Sean, and a whittling set to say get off my lawn. You know that kind of stuff. Well, of course.

Speaker 2:

Okay okay here's a good question. We only have two questions left. What do cows eat on factory farms? Oh, it got quiet.

Speaker 3:

So I'm going to answer this based off of what my father-in-law used. Okay, and it was hay with corn, and then they put in their shoot I don't remember what else it was.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was like a mash.

Speaker 3:

They'd mash up inside the silos and give it to them.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so that was a homeowner type of a family farm.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, 2,000 acres. Okay, so I mean he had a decent-sized farm.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, Hello yeah.

Speaker 4:

Sean, what do you think? The only thing I know is going off of feedlots.

Speaker 2:

I thought you were going to say off of Yellowstone, no, no no Feedlots.

Speaker 4:

So they do a mixture of ingredients, kind of spray and stuff, because they have to make sure that they have a certain weight and they're making certain goals, that the farmer or the rancher owns the cows, so they make certain goals for their weight, so they can sell off oats and that kind of stuff.

Speaker 2:

Okay, well, here's the answer. What are cows fed on factory farms? Rather than being allowed to graze on grass and other vegetables, as they would naturally, dairy cows in factory farms were fed a diet high in processed cereal grains, such as corn and wheat. There it is, there it is. Last question what is the most farmed animal in the world? Chris Pigs? No, you know this, though. Martin County is the. Let me see, we're number one in Hogs. Bacon capital of Minnesota. Bacon Bacon, capital of Minnesota, right here. Wow, and we're number six in the United States.

Speaker 1:

Where's the best place to go to get the best bacon, like if you're going to go have a bacon sandwich in Martin County or some kind of a bacon for breakfast. Where are you going to go?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, if they have like you know, bacon Fest or something. Where would you?

Speaker 2:

Well, during the fair we go to the Martin County Pork Producers. They make some incredible pork chops On a stick.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, those are good Mel's. My wife and my son Declan rode across Iowa in Rat, brie, yep and they had the not Martin County, but they had the Iowa pork producers there and they did the whole thing with the pork chops. Oh man.

Speaker 2:

Oh, they're great, Don't get any better. Oh yeah, no, they don't. I was trying to think we don't really have any place around here that's like bacon, like a blue plate cafe or anything like that. Well, candy and I have been going lately to the American Legion in Sherburn for breakfast. They serve breakfast, yes, they do, wow, they do, but we don't have bacon, we have sausage there and we like their sausage.

Speaker 3:

So when you go try it out, make sure you tell them you heard it on the podcast.

Speaker 2:

That's right. Give a shout out there to them. That the podcast, that's right. Give a shout out there to him. That's right. Five more dollars, I don't know, okay, so anyway, 22.5, excuse me, 22.8 billion. Chickens, chickens, chickens.

Speaker 3:

I'm going to guess chickens, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Alright, somebody get him out of here.

Speaker 2:

Excuse me, that's a really good guess, Ricky. Thank you.

Speaker 4:

Okay. So anyway, did you hear how he said that it was almost like when you draw something you're like that's great, I'm going to put it on the fridge.

Speaker 2:

That was the answer he got. Yeah, that's what we do. Let me see. What do you got. Ricky, what were you going to talk about? You said you had a story.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, sorry, page 7. Page 7, okay, and we're going to talk about the ham bingo? Oh yeah yeah, the first annual ham bingo. Yes, it was and it was. I believe it was put on by the Chamber of Commerce. No, the yeah, yeah, yeah, it was the Trimont Area Chamber of Commerce, Yep yep and the proceeds that were raised were going to the Trimont County Food Shelf. So they raised about $2,500, and then also hygiene. You know hygiene products.

Speaker 3:

Oh, okay, gotcha, yeah, yeah that evening that were dropped off. We want to give a shout-out to Pizza Ranch up there in Fairmont for the pizzas that they prepped and prepared for the event.

Speaker 2:

Yep we have Pizza Ranch left.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so what's a ham bingo.

Speaker 2:

Well see, what happened was Sherburn Fire Department. They had turkey bingo two weeks ago. So you play bingo and when you win you get a turkey. So down here or up here in Tremont we did ham bingo. So we played bingo and the winners got hams.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, they had several raffle items, gift cards they gave out and I'm sure they're excited about next year already, right guys? Oh? Yeah, I'm sure, if you want to get involved with that, contact the Chamber of Commerce. I'm sure they'd love the volunteer help or even donations.

Speaker 2:

Could you?

Speaker 3:

do? Ricky, that was an excellent commercial, that was really good. It was really good.

Speaker 2:

Ricky's the only non-radio person among the four of us and he was nervous. He did the best commercial.

Speaker 1:

It was great.

Speaker 2:

I don't even know what I'm going to do we owe Ricky $5.

Speaker 1:

Now I know you.

Speaker 2:

No, you, you're the one who drove a Beamer. You're the daddy, that's right, you drove a Beamer, you drove a Beamer today.

Speaker 4:

So if you play this, out, right you could get a turkey.

Speaker 3:

a ham Is there mashed potatoes and gravy bingo.

Speaker 4:

And then you just get all your meals ready.

Speaker 2:

That would be good.

Speaker 4:

The stuffing dingo. Let's just go ahead and throw like a weed.

Speaker 2:

Oh that's the one we want to go to.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but not everybody wins. As God is my witness, I really thought pumpkin pies were really yummy. That's my favorite episode ever from WKRP in Cincinnati you know what makes that episode great is that they're all sitting in there, listening, knowing what's going to happen, and yet they still allow it to go in the air Like they still like they know what's going to happen and they allow it to happen, and I think that's the greatest thing.

Speaker 2:

I don't know. Yeah, it was a great episode. Yeah, it was hey really quick, just a quick break.

Speaker 1:

Yep, yep, yep as Christmas is on its way. I was just curious if folks would be able to tell us their favorite memory of Christmas in Martin County. And you know favorite memory of Christmas. Okay, that maybe they could send it. Is there an email they could send it in? Maybe you might publish it, or something.

Speaker 2:

Sure, of course, yep, yep email and they could send it in and maybe you might publish it or something. Sure, of course, it's MCStar S-T-A-R. Michael M-I-C-H-A-E-L at gmailcom. Mcstarmichael. Next week, in the paper we are going to have, let me see third and fourth graders. They're writing their letters to Santa. I've been putting them in right before you guys got here. In fact I was putting them in. One kid was funny. He was funny, he goes. So I have questions. He goes. So what's my middle name? Nice? I thought that was pretty slick.

Speaker 1:

So I was at a Christmas party for my work the other day and of course St Nick shows up in his incredible attire. And I just want you to know that not only does St Nick know your middle name, but he knows what you're wanting. Right then he gave me a present. I opened it up. I had been wanting Thin Mints all night and I got Thin Mints. So I'm just saying Santa knows, don't question the big guy.

Speaker 2:

Don't question him. You know, I like this idea of Thin Mints. They don't work. No, they work, no.

Speaker 3:

I've eaten boxes of them.

Speaker 2:

I'm not any thinner. Okay, Sean, you were getting ready to say something. I saw you grab the mic.

Speaker 4:

Oh no, I just keep gravitating to it and just doing this.

Speaker 2:

I thought you were ready, ricky, you ready to say something? Okay, ricky's got something. He wants another commercial he's going to do Go ahead.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, this is brought to you by Paradise Grill. Wait, wait, wait.

Speaker 2:

Paradise. Grill so the Sherburne Legion Post. Wait, no, you've got to pull it in closer.

Speaker 3:

So the Sherburne Legion, post 356. They have a steak and shrimp dinner night. It is going to be Saturday, december 14th, so just in a couple days Serving will be from 5 to 8 pm. So go out there, give them a shout out. It's going to be some great food, and then they also have takeout available. So make sure you check those out.

Speaker 4:

Ricky Chad wants to take it out the way I Wyoming you know, who he reminds me of Is the straight man in Good Morning Vietnam After Runway comes on.

Speaker 3:

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, who's really good.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, right, but it's just a total difference. Dude, why aren't you doing this more?

Speaker 3:

I don't know, I've never thought about it.

Speaker 2:

Okay, on to the next Ricky's a man of I was in radio way back before these boys were ever born, and I remember one time Chris, this probably happened to you also I was sitting there and I had a guy, the news guy. We had a window between us, his booth was okay so we could see each other. While he was in there, I'm reading the news. He came around Wait, how did that story go? He came around and he lit my news on fire. That's all I remember. So I'm reading the news and he lights it on fire with a cigarette lighter. I'm trying to read it. It is burning up. The last sentence burned away. So I made up a story and ended it because I couldn't read it. Anyway, all right, wasn't that funny?

Speaker 1:

Hey, I have something I want to talk about. Okay, so on page 11, it is the Bake Smarter, not Harder a do-it-all cookie recipe, and I love it. Patty Diamond put it out there. It's going to be great. Here's what you need for the dough. It's going to give you six dozen. It's going to take you an hour and a half, so it's going to be a little time. Six dozen is not bad.

Speaker 2:

But not bad, and it's going to take time.

Speaker 1:

You've got over, you got the kids coming or whatever it might be. You hang out with them. You put on some christmas music beans in the in the back, singing I'll be home for christmas. You can plan on me back. Yeah, beans in the back, uh, but it's just butter. It's some, uh, brown sugar, some granulated sugar, uh, baking soda, salt stuff, eggs, I. So here's why I brought that up because I wasn't able to submit my recipe. So I want to give you guys a recipe now. It's like five ingredients. It is the best fudge you're ever going to have. Do you guys like fudge?

Speaker 4:

Everybody like fudge, everyone loves fudge.

Speaker 2:

Well, not everybody.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, you guys do Everybody in this room. That's true, and I did ask in this room. So it's butter. Now no judgment. By the way, it's butter. It is powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla. Sounds like fudge and Velveeta cheese. Velveeta cheese Trust me, is he having a stroke? 12 ounces of Velveeta, two sticks of butter. You melt that on the stovetop, you just stir it, don't let it brown. Then you add in your cocoa and your sifted powdered sugar.

Speaker 1:

That's a half a cup no one full cup of cocoa powder, four cups of powdered sugar. You mix it, mix it, mix it, mix it, mix it, mix it, mix it. Then you add in your teaspoon of vanilla extract, let it set, let it set and I promise you it is the smoothest, creamiest, yummiest, non-cheese-tasting fudge you'll ever have. Really Yep there you have it.

Speaker 2:

Wow, there you have it. That's extra, extra risk. Okay, five bucks more to him. Five bucks more to him.

Speaker 4:

Five points to Gryffindor. I'm making money here. I want to give a special shout out to a birthday boy. A birthday boy, yeah. His name is Charlie Rigel.

Speaker 2:

Not you. No, I know, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4:

So he is 90. Happy birthday that is awesome.

Speaker 2:

Good job Charlie. Yeah here I'm honking for him.

Speaker 4:

So if you have in your heart, if you want to go, send him a Christmas card or a birthday card instead of a Christmas card. He can do one of the same, send them both. Absolutely Throw a Valentine's Day in there Easter, just throw the whole gambit at him and then just tell him the dates he needs to open them, just put it on here on this day.

Speaker 2:

Maybe he should open them now.

Speaker 4:

So send the cards.

Speaker 2:

You're going to want to send it. Oh, okay, anyway.

Speaker 4:

You're going to want to send it to 201 East Cargill Street in Sherbourne, Minnesota.

Speaker 2:

All right 561-7171. All right. Oh it's 201. East Cargill Street in Sherbourne, minnesota. All right, 5-6-1-7-1. All right, oh, it's right here, I'm not. It is right there. It is right there. It is right there. And while we're at it, I guess we'll talk about the top five movies of the weekend that we're here, right All right, all right, number one. Wait, you should go from five to one.

Speaker 4:

You want to go five to one, well, yeah. Okay, so number five is the best Christmas pageant ever.

Speaker 3:

That was good, that was really good.

Speaker 2:

I liked it a lot. Yeah, we did too. Did you see it? Yeah, okay, what are you doing? Oh, you're getting too warm. Okay, yeah, it was good. I was real surprised.

Speaker 3:

So what shirt on from the best Christmas pageant ever? And it's with an angel on his shirt right there, If you remember the old TV show she was the one that walks in and goes.

Speaker 1:

Hey, hey.

Speaker 2:

I didn't know it was a TV show Unto you a child is born.

Speaker 4:

Oh, that's cool. So he's all in.

Speaker 2:

Four doctors say it's good.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, it's a good movie.

Speaker 2:

Four doctors got bonked on the head. What has it earned?

Speaker 4:

Let's see. Last time I checked it was, like I don't know, between $30 and $50 million, oh, okay. But when you think about it, it's a really small budget movie Made by the guy that did the Chosen.

Speaker 1:

Yep exactly Made by Dallas Jenkins, the guy behind the Chosen. This was his project. He's wanted to do since he got into filmmaking and I was able to talk to him about that a little bit and just kind of ask him what his heartbeat was behind it.

Speaker 2:

Oh, you had one. That's why I have the shirt.

Speaker 1:

We got to see a screening of it at my radio station and, yeah, a little name dropping right here, no, but really honestly got to talk to Dallas and just a nice guy. But he said just wanted to recreate the memory of the old ABC or I think it was ABC special.

Speaker 3:

The best little Christmas pageant we'd play every year.

Speaker 1:

And he goes. Man, I just love that. And so there's a little bit of throwback in it too. If you remember the old TV show or the old TV special when it would come on the air, there's some throwback to it. There's a little bit of that, so you can just enjoy it. Great movie, go see it with your family.

Speaker 2:

The little girl who plays the lead. She's incredible.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

She's incredible, she's really good. Okay, sean, what's number four? All right?

Speaker 4:

Number four is Red One. It's made about $87 million With the budget and a budget. Unless they don't have any faith in it, Like Borderlands or anything Sony Spider-Man related, they don't kind of throw anything towards it unless it's Venom, it's not bad, it's different. I haven't seen it so.

Speaker 1:

It's different but, yeah, you can watch the streaming.

Speaker 4:

If you've got nothing better to do. It's a little different. It's action heavy, it's a Christmas movie. It it's a little different. It's action heavy. It's a Christmas movie. It's a Christmas movie.

Speaker 1:

Oh it is, I didn't know that. Santa gets kidnapped. Santa gets kidnapped and basically the Rock and Captain America have to save him. Have to save him.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay, I read one. I had no clue what that was about. Oh, that makes sense. Now, one of the kids who wrote a Christmas letter mentioned that and I had no clue what I was talking about.

Speaker 4:

Okay so number three is Gladiator 2, which I am. Have you seen it? Yeah, I was extremely shocked on. It was not bad and I was really scared because Ridley Scott is extremely hit and miss, especially with him being what 87. Usually, you know, later on in life you lose a step or two on certain things. And it's not bad, it's a good.

Speaker 4:

Now the bad thing is Paul Mescal isn't as good as Russell Crowe is, he doesn't command the screen like Russell Crowe did, especially in Gladiator, where he's just on fire. Ricky hates that movie.

Speaker 2:

Do you like, ricky?

Speaker 3:

So I mean, I'm a big Tom Hanks fan. So the year Castaway came out was the same year Gladiator came out. Okay, castaway lost.

Speaker 2:

Did they have to fight or something Castaway lost?

Speaker 3:

to the Gladiator for like.

Speaker 2:

And you're still holding a grudge.

Speaker 3:

I haven't seen the Gladiator because of that.

Speaker 1:

Castaway was horrible. He talked to a ball the whole movie. Come on y'all. He stayed alive with the ball. You cannot tell me that that was a good movie. He stayed alive with the ball. No, yes, hey, friends, all right, let us know. Cast Away or Gladiator? No, just send us in.

Speaker 2:

Let us know, but they're two different whole concepts.

Speaker 1:

It doesn't matter.

Speaker 3:

Apparently, Ricky thinks they're the same movie so he won't go see the other one, but I'm probably not the best person to be giving movie reviews.

Speaker 2:

Ricky and I, we kind of are the same. I can watch a movie, finish watching it and I couldn't tell you what happened. Normally, but do you?

Speaker 4:

stay awake during the movie Sometimes.

Speaker 2:

That's better than Ricky.

Speaker 4:

He'll fall asleep two minutes into a film. We check on him to make sure he's.

Speaker 3:

I fell asleep to Forrest Gump in the theater.

Speaker 2:

Well, I can understand that you can. Yeah, I can. Okay, I mean, it'd be hard to fall asleep to Gladiators Because there's a lot of action.

Speaker 3:

I'd fall asleep to Star Wars, star Trek.

Speaker 2:

That would make no sense to me either.

Speaker 4:

Okay, number two. Number two is Wicked, which I was the biggest hater. On this one, I honestly didn't think it was going to be any good. It looked really CGI heavy and I'm very much of a like a Chris Nolan, kira Kurosawa fan, where if you can do it in like do it without minimal CGI or any kind of visual effects or special effects, you do it. And this one, from the get-go I was like, ah, this is going to be terrible. It wasn't bad. It's a little long, it's almost about three hours long, but it's two-parter. There's another one coming out in November next year, so if you really enjoy it, then guess what? You're in for a treat next year too.

Speaker 2:

So isn't this the Wizard of Oz? And the Two Witches, bad and Good, get Together.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, this is based off a Broadway play and, chris, you might know more about it than yeah, it was a Broadway play.

Speaker 1:

It's actually based off the original book and in the book they're a little darker, the characters, and so the Wizard of Oz actually does take place inside of Wicked on Broadway. Okay, so they do the first part. They talk about how Glinda and Elphaba the green you know the bad witch and the good witch they were really just friends, and then what brings them and tears them apart? And then you have Wizard of Oz takes place and then you have the aftermath of what happens after the Wizard of Oz to end the movie, and it's all in this episode.

Speaker 1:

No, the first one. This only takes us up to that song Defying Gravity. Maybe you've heard that. You know people have heard Defying Gravity. Maybe you've heard that you know people have heard Defying Gravity. That's kind of the big song from that Dina. Menzel who played Anna in Frozen played Elsa in Frozen.

Speaker 1:

She was the voice behind Elsa in Frozen. So kind of a big deal. Your kids will know. If you don't know, your kids will know you are my kids. Well, that's true, and we know. Even Rick knew that one. So we know. Yeah, we know Even Rick knew that one. So we know. Yeah, so my daughters I have we have five kids and my daughters, we have two daughters and they loved it. They went and just thought it was great. Just, you know, it's Kaylin, my oldest, she's 27. That's her favorite musical. She absolutely loved this.

Speaker 2:

Okay, yeah, and Kaylin does lots of plays. All right, ready. Number one Wait drum roll, Ricky Drum roll. Okay, he was like wait what?

Speaker 4:

Moana 2, which is no surprise. It was either going to be Wicked and Moana 2. And since Moana 2 just came out more recent by a week, I think then it was going to be number one. It's a good.

Speaker 2:

What's the whole. So have you seen any Okay?

Speaker 4:

so the first one's about a Polynesian girl who just the ocean keeps calling to her, and back in the day her people were explorers. I guess you'd say.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 4:

And then they end up on an island. Well, she meets, she keeps getting drawn to the ocean, and the ocean's a character in the first one, and and so yeah, the ocean's a character, yeah, yeah it's. It's kind of fun, like you know um yeah yeah, and so then she meets a guy named maui who's played by the rock, so he's doing pretty good this winter I I guess Box office one and four, and he has a song called You're Welcome. You would know that one if you heard it.

Speaker 1:

You say, hey, you're welcome.

Speaker 4:

I heard that song yeah yeah, so this one takes place later on, and I'm not going to spoil anything like that, because I want you to go see these. And these are all playing at. Was it Fairmont?

Speaker 2:

Fairmont, fairmont, fairmont 5. They actually are. Yeah, they're playing there. They've been playing in our local theater here in Sherbourne also.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, yeah. So I would say go check it out, it's not a bad story. The new one I think I like the songs better in the first one than the second one, and that was a lot to do with lynn ranwell miranda. He has a lot of big hits. He helped with moana hamilton, yeah, hamilton, oh okay.

Speaker 4:

So he, he helped out with the first one and then he stepped aside to do some other projects. He didn't have time and so they brought a new crew and it just wasn't the same musically as like the first one. Everything just felt really, you know, it all flew it and went through really well. And this, this new one, it didn't feel that great musically but it's still a fun, enjoyable ride. My daughter and my nieces, they loved it when they went and saw it and they wouldn't stop talking about it. So I was like all right, I better go watch it so I can converse with them and be like hey, what do you think of this part?

Speaker 2:

Last time I listened to a granddaughter Tell me a movie was great, it was what's the obvious song that turned into a movie. I can't remember the name.

Speaker 4:

Mamma Mia.

Speaker 2:

I like Mamma Mia, mamma Mia 2. Kaylin said oh, papa, you're going to love it. So I went to see it. That's it, I'm done.

Speaker 1:

I didn't like Mamma Mia too yeah, I'm not a Mamma Mia no, I like Mamma Mia because I like.

Speaker 2:

Abba I, but no, I grew up with Abba, though I was in radio when Abba came out. How long do we have left? However long we want.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to go down the rabbit hole, but I'm not a big jukebox musical fan. So basically, you know, when they take an artist's hits and turn them into a musical, and I'm like so across the universe.

Speaker 4:

Across the universe, even the one.

Speaker 1:

I was in one which it was an Elvis-themed one and it's called All Shook Up and it was all right. I mean it didn't follow Elvis' life or anything like that, but I'm still like hmm.

Speaker 2:

I was amazed at the way they took ABBA music and made it a movie. And turned it into a movie yeah.

Speaker 4:

I think one of them that does it really well is Moulin Rouge, but that has to do with the whole atmosphere of the whole movie.

Speaker 2:

I got to tell you.

Speaker 4:

Moulin Rouge. We're sitting there watching it in the movie theater.

Speaker 2:

Spoiler alert by the way, it's been out for 20 years. I was going to say it's not a spoiler.

Speaker 4:

You haven't seen it yet. Ricky, it's on his list.

Speaker 2:

Well, candy and I went to see it because we wanted to see it. Right, we're sitting there, it comes to the end. She dies. Candy goes, she's not dead, she's going to come back. They're running credits. She goes, no, they're going to surprise us. She made me sit there through all the credits. Even after the credits were over she kept saying, no, they're not, they're coming back on. I said, candy, it's over, give it up, honey, all right, so that does it. The boys flew in from you know, I told you already from Houston, delaware and Wyoming. Candy kept it a secret for, I guess, five months.

Speaker 1:

She had people lying to you left and right.

Speaker 2:

Oh, she did, she did. I knew nothing about this. This was the best secret ever and I'm so excited. Tomorrow, this will be next week for them, but we're going to do another podcast While I have them here. We're going to do podcasts every hour for the next 48 hours.
