Ever tried a sport and immediately thought, 'I need more of this in my life'? That's exactly what happened when I picked up a pickleball paddle for the first time during a memorable family weekend in Iowa. Join me, Mike Ennis, as I share not only my newfound love for this lively game but also the heartwarming stories that make Martin County truly special. You'll hear about a community rallying to support a local teacher's family facing tough times and the charmingly odd request that led Aunt Ivy to adjust her crossword puzzles. Plus, we'll celebrate new beginnings with the birth of Martin Michael Clancy and mark milestones with birthdays at Goldfinch.

On the political front, there's never a dull moment as we uncover some of the quirkiest and most unique races in our local landscape. With no candidates officially on the ballot in Truman and a face-off between current and past mayors in Trimont, the mayoral races are nothing short of fascinating. We'll also bring you recipes quirky enough to match, like "Bewitchingly Bold Deviled Monster Eggs," and take a humorous look at small-town life with "Redneck Love." Join us for a journey through the spirited world of Martin County politics, where your personal values mean more than party lines, and hear updates on council candidates in towns like Donnell and Ormsby. This episode promises an engaging look at the lively happenings in our community.

Speaker 1:

All right, here we are, episode four, and you said it wasn't going to last. We are in episode number four and today we've got lots going on. First of all, my name is Mike Ennis and I am the host, and this is Martin County Stars Newsmakers. We're located in Martin County, minnesota, just in case you've tuned in going where are these guys. We're in Martin County, minnesota, and we're just north of the Iowa border on I-90,. Okay, if you don't know where we're at, and we talk about what's going on in Martin County and this week we're going to talk election news. We're going to go through the paper first and then we're going to talk about the elections that are coming up a little bit. Okay, we'll take a look at some of the local races and see what is going on there.

Speaker 1:

Other than that, oh, I mentioned I was going to get some music and I spent some time with my grandson last weekend we were down in Iowa seeing them and our son and daughter-in-law. I played pickleball for the very first time and I didn't get hurt, so that's an achievement in itself. Anyway, we played pickleball for the very first time and I didn't get hurt, so that's an achievement in itself. Anyway, we played pickleball, you know, and I was on a team that lost two times. I'm not saying it's me, but I'm beginning to think it may be Because both those teams, when I was not on them, won. So you know, you kind of understand where I'm coming from, right. So, anyway, we lost both times but I sure enjoyed it. I'm going to have to find a pickleball league here and you know, I'm going to join a pickleball league and I'm going to get me a little paddle and I am going to go to town, anyway, playing pickleball.

Speaker 1:

What's going on in the news? Martin County Star, that's our paper and that's what we're going to talk about mainly. I do have an article from another paper that I'm going to look at, but other than that, pretty much that's what we're going to talk about. First of all, we had a really nice story on the front page of Benefit this weekend for a family excuse me of a Martin County West teacher. She has a baby, let me see, he's about a year old-ish, she's a second grade teacher, her name is Brooklyn and let me see, she had a baby and he has a congenitive heart disease and he's had open heart surgery and anyway, they're having a benefit for the family this coming weekend. So if you are in the area, stop by, let me see Where's it at. Stop by, let me see Where's it at. It'll be a silent auction. It'll be at the Junior and Senior High School cafeteria in Sherburne, 9 am to 12.30 at Martin County West. Okay, they'll be serving the normal pancake breakfast. Looks good, sounds good. Picture of them on the front page. Nice-looking couple, really nice-looking family and anyway. So we'll hopefully encourage you to stop by and see them. Free will donations. So give, you know, give from the heart, right, give like that's going to be, like that was your grandchild and how you would want somebody to give for them.

Speaker 1:

In other news, page one, two, three, okay, page four Aunt Ivy got a real nice lady, a real nice letter from a lady this week. She said I really love the paper, I love my crossword puzzle. Aunt Ivy's cute, but I don't like her. And she went on to say, because she took up my crossword puzzle space. So Aunt Ivy reached out to us and said look, take some of my space back and give it to her. Make the crossword puzzle bigger. So we did. The crossword puzzle is now three columns wide by about I don't know 12 inches, 13 inches long, so there's lots of room there. And it was written by a real nice lady. She's in her 90s and she says she has trouble seeing. So Aunt Ivy went to bat for her and she got it done. So if you have something you want to say and send to Aunt Ivy, do so. M-c-star-aunt-ivy at BevComnet. All right, keep that in mind when you write her.

Speaker 1:

Also on page five, another baby born. Congratulations go out to Marissa Clancy on the birth of her son, martin Michael Clancy. Well, he's a good looking kid too, man, his eyes are open, he's smart, he's got more hair than I do, more hair than I do and he's like a week old in this picture. So also, happy birthdays go out to the gold Finch residents A couple of them here let's see, uh, artist bloom and Mary Peterson both having birthdays this week. If you know either one of them over at Goldfinch, you know, stop by, say hi to them, tell them happy birthday.

Speaker 1:

There's an article on page five about the local drop-off locations for the Operation Christmas Child. This is that shoebox Christmas Child stuff. You know what I'm talking about, the ones that Samaritan's Purse puts together, all right? Well, anyway, in the paper paper. There are the drop-off locations and the hours and the times and I'll just tell you where Trimont Covenant Church in Trimont and then also Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont, but I'm not going to go through all the times with you, but they're all listed in the paper on page what was that five? That was page number five. Yeah, page six it's full. It's full.

Speaker 1:

Lots of things going on, lots of library news. My goodness, it's a lot of library news. Quarter of a page of library news. Let me see. There's a movie Monday. No, it hasn't happened yet. It's coming Monday at the Fairmont Library. Casper is going to be the movie. Also, there's all kinds of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 different events going on.

Speaker 1:

Also on page 8 is the pet page, and this week is how to care for your pet chicken. You know this is becoming ridiculous. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm the one putting it on there, I would say knock it off. But no, I'm just playing. How to care for your pet chicken, that's kind of interesting.

Speaker 1:

Page 10 has got a nice looking recipe, bewitchingly bold deviled monster eggs. Deviled Monster Eggs Huh, I'm going to have to read that later. Of course. Here's an interesting title. On page 11, on the church page, redneck Love. I read that. I laughed and I had to put it in because I thought that's a funny story, all right, so keep that in mind. Of course. On page 13 and 14, both those pages are sports and Tiger's Claw Pass passed the Mavericks man. We hate hearing that, don't we? 15-0, they beat the Mavericks. You can get the whole story on page number 14. So take a look at that.

Speaker 1:

All right, I told you we were going to talk about political news, not only local, but even state and national news, of course. The big news of course is for president, and you guys all know what's going on there, because you can't escape. You can't escape that. Here's my only advice.

Speaker 1:

I'm not going to say who to vote for. It's none of my business who you vote for. I'm not going to say how to vote. I'm just going to tell you vote your heart. You know. Vote the way, the campaign and the candidate. Well, they speak to you. They vote your values.

Speaker 1:

You know, don't just vote a party, because that's what I've always done. You know, my family grew up, whatever, ex-party and so I always do that. No, I'm talking vote your heart. You know there are some things I like about the Republican Party and some things I cannot stand. The party itself, I really don't care for the candidates I don't mind on, you know, in some cases. But you know, don't just vote a party because it's red or it's blue and don't just vote independent because I just want to be obstinate, unless that's you know's really who you are. You're kind of throwing away your vote in some ways because those candidates never win and so you're kind of giving nobody a vote there. But if that's what you want to do, again, that's your choice. It's America. You can vote whoever you want to vote for, and so do that.

Speaker 1:

Just remember to vote. Early voting is going on right now. We were at the courthouse just today paying our property taxes and there was voting going on there. There were two people up there voting and I like I don't know about you I like voting on election day. It's just been in my blood for a long, long time. I've always voted on election day. I don't know, it just seems right to me personally. So that's what I'm going to do, of course. Again, keep that in mind. It's your option also, but remember to vote the way that the candidate speaks to you. If they vote your values, if they talk about your values, then that's who you want to vote for, not because your mom or dad says you have to or that's why you've always done it. Your husband or your wife say you need to, but because it's the right thing to do. Okay, keep that in mind.

Speaker 1:

Now let's talk about local politics. What is going on locally? I saw this story in one of the other papers and I thought it was pretty interesting Mayor write-in on ballot for Truman. Truman has nobody on the ballot for mayor Nobody. I suppose if you live in Truman and you want to be mayor, go out and get about eight friends together, go in and vote. You know, have a pizza party and go all down there together and vote and you probably will end up mayor in Truman. Nobody's on the ballot. It's all write-in. So that's going to be an interesting one to watch. I kind of look forward to seeing that one Locally here.

Speaker 1:

Let's take a look at other news and other candidacies. Which one's this? Where am I at Trying to find the town? Oh, donnell. Okay, here we go, donnell. They have vote for one for mayor and there's one listed, marlin blyzmer. So I'm gonna guess he's gonna win the mayor's job if he wants it. It's his council candidates.

Speaker 1:

You vote for two. And uh, there's. Uh, let me see there's. Let me see there's Jeremiah Hefner, dean Jensen, mary Peterson and Charlene Charlene excuse me, my goodness, charlene Somnes. All right, you'll vote for two of those. You'll vote for two of those.

Speaker 1:

And let me see also Ormsby, big town, ormsby. They've got current councilman. The interim mayor is Justin Hanson and this is the last year of his term. Ryan Campbell has two years left, chad Carlson last year of his term and Lonnie Watson has two years left. Wow, I don't see. Are they running? I'm going to have to do more checking on the Ormsby situation and then there's a vacancy.

Speaker 1:

I've got to look and see who's running there and who's going to win Trimont. This is going to be an interesting race in Trimont. You have the current mayor, joanne Russenberger, versus a past mayor it's been several years since Kevin has been the mayor, but he's running again and Luis Coutinho. So there's three candidates for mayor there and, honestly, I haven't seen yard signs for any. Oh, yeah, I have. Yeah, I have two of them I've seen yard signs for, but I haven't Either one have contacted me about being on the podcast or putting ads in the paper. So I don't know. I don't know where they stand, you know I? I know joanne a little bit, just from the council meetings, but I don't know that much about her council member candidates are ronald shade, mike betty, uh, beatty, uh, joanne beatty, is it Beatty or Betty? Anyway, justin Lubin. By the way, justin will be on the podcast next week. He's going to come on and talk about why you should vote for him. That'll be next week.

Speaker 1:

Bruce Bortrager, brian Bush, krumwad and Lisa Rahm Krumwad. See, I don't know some of these last names. I'm sorry, I'm probably butchering them and I don't mean to. This is all done innocently, promise, bruce and Brian. Though, bruce and Bush, they both resigned back in August, if you remember. Was it August or early September, if you remember? But they're still on the ballot so they still can be voted back in and then it will be up to them whether or not they want to. Uh, they want to accept the seat again. So, anyway, keep that in mind.

Speaker 1:

Again, open, you guys want to talk? Come on the podcast, be happy to have you in here. We'll talk about whatever. They will give you a chance to plead your case in sherburne we have, uh, going for city council is r? Ronnie Beckless, thomas Carruthers, richard Bean, aaron Grice, doug Schroeder and Tucker Schooneman. Oh wait, wait, doug Schroeder and Tucker Schooneman are both running for mayor. Okay, keep that in mind. They're both running for mayor. The current mayor is stepping down. He's this last of his term Kind of interesting.

Speaker 1:

Aaron Grice and his mom, sarah Kramer Sarah's on the council right now and Aaron, if he wins, would be on the council with his mother. That's kind of interesting. You know, I don't know how I feel about that. I know them both. They're nice people. I don't have nothing against them, just the concept of a mother and a son both on a city council, or a husband and a wife, or a brother and a sister, which is the case in Tremont, that's a brother and a sister running. They could both be on, and I guess they have a right to do so.

Speaker 1:

I just don't know if I like it. I guess I don't have to vote for them, though, do I? You know? I suppose it just seems to me when you have a council with four members on it and two of them are from one family, you know, that's, I don't know. I don't know, I don't know if that's such a great idea, but that's up to you, the voter. You guys can vote him in or vote him out. It's going to be an interesting political season Next week.

Speaker 1:

Let me see, next week is the 30th, so that's the last newspaper before the election, so we ought to have a little more information for you. I mentioned Justin will be on with us next week and he'll have his chance to tell us why we should vote for him in Trimont. Look, if you're a candidate running for mayor, councilman, any of those seats, any of the seats, don't care, I'm happy to have you on. I've reached out to a few, but I don't know a whole lot of you people and I would love to have you come in. So you have to give me a call. It's my number is 507-764-6681. And I'm here all the time, it seems like. So I'd love to have you come down and sit down. I talked to Dan from the mayor in where, welcome, and he's going to be in Alaska. So I'm trying to get him scheduled for the podcast before he goes to Alaska. But we'll see how that works out. Dan Schmidke, we'll see how that works out.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, other news and things going on around the area. This week we've got a big issue coming out, or next week we have a big issue coming out, and next week or this week it was, let me see, co-op, yeah. And then next week it's going to be our salute to the pork producers and I've been working on that all day and man got some interesting articles I found and some really interesting facts about pork and things I didn't know, things about pigs that I had no clue. I did not grow up in Martin County and so all of this is kind of new to me and so I'm finding out all kinds of things that I did not know before and I'm going to lay odds. A lot of this some of you don't know either. You'll see it next week. I'm not going to spill the beans yet.
